On the surface, performance is sluggish compared to a native Carbon application. This is apparent not only in interacting with the application (scrolling, resizing window frames, etc.), but even in doing things as simple as moving the Mendeley Desktop window. A true Carbon UI would alleviate these issues.
A native UI would also solve other nagging issues such as the window not respecting the menu bar and dock location ( http://feedback.mendeley.com/forums/4941-mendeley-feedback/suggestions/201132-stop-letting-window-slide-under-menu-bar-in-mac-os?ref=title ).
I'm almost certain that multitouch support would come at almost no cost (code-wise) in a Carbon UI (as requested here: http://feedback.mendeley.com/forums/4941-mendeley-feedback/suggestions/677561-add-support-for-multitouch-gestures-to-the-mac-ver?ref=title ).

maximilian.held83 said:

Agreed.
Not sure whether this is a framework/UI issue, but I just find the performance of Mendeley Desktop for Mac pretty lacking. It's just not very responsive, both in search and scrolling PDFs. Preview is MUCH faster and slicker, so it's gotta be possible.
Maybe a more native application would do the trick?
Anyway, this is a big deal; usability and responsiveness needs to be perfect for an app that users will use so intensively (for hours on end).

maximilian.held83tag:feedback.mendeley.com,2008-02-07:Event/113507942012-05-15T11:49:28-04:002012-05-15T11:49:28-04:00See highlight text quickly, like the notes on the side bar. One of the features which have made MS word useful is the captions and cross-referencing. Adding the required citations, in the middle of document, by selecting the whole text and pressing F9 or update, the numbering automatically gets in order according to their appearance in the document.
Since Mendeley Citations and references are in updatable field code format, if one of them appears in the selected part of the document, the update function gets inactivate, since it can’t recognize Mendeley citations.

Jeppe Lyngsø said:

I also struggled with this problem working with a recent paper for publishing.
Go to: http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm and follow the guide to setting up macroes in your normal.dotm or whatever template you're using. Use the suggested UpdateAll macro and save it in the open template. Now for convenience make a shortcut button to the new macro in the ribbon somewhere meaningful (placed mine at the end of the references tab). Now when you want to update the field codes in the entire document (with Mendeley citations inserted) press the UpdateAll macro button and voila! Every field should now be up to date with proper numbering etc. Hope this helps. :)

Jeppe Lyngsøtag:feedback.mendeley.com,2008-02-07:Event/113492412012-05-15T07:05:53-04:002012-05-15T07:05:53-04:00many papers from one author the same year [updated]
Here's the problem i'm facing. Looks like the Vancouver citation style in Mendeley needs to be updated for the in-text citation as well as the Reference list at the end.
I am listing below some of the discrepancies I discovered through the submission process so that these could be incorporated in Mendeley:
1- The in-text citation should be in superscipt instead of running text
2- Upto six authors can be mentioned instead of just three in the current version
3- An abbreviated version of the Journal name needs to be cited instead of the full name
4- The issue number should not be mentioned; while the volume number of the Journal needs to be highlighted in Bold
I checked with Zotero users and apparently they face similar issues. The Vancouver format is one of the most commonly used ones and it reflects badly if the format is not styled properly. Therefore, it is something that Mendeley might have to modify on its own on an urgent basis.

Anonymous said:

@Roland

Now, I can only export the references at once, not the Pdf's (the actual papers). To export the papers, I have to open them 1 by 1 and copy-paste them separately ("open file externally", "open file in containing folder"...). This seems a waste of time and effort.
Typical Scenario: as a researcher/lecturer I meet with a student or colleague; we select a number of relevant references in my library, and, of course, they want to copy and read the papers (the attached pdf's). So I have to copy them 1 by 1. It would be very convenient if I could not only export the references, but also the attached files at once to a destination folder (a shared folder, a memory stick, ...).

The (probably incomplete) list of dependencies I've discovered:
python
gnu standard c++ library
libICE 1.0.7
libpng 1.2.47
libSM 1.2.0
libXrender 0.9.6

Why?

Charles Elworthy said:

I join with others, such as Jadrian Miles, who have grave concerns about sensitive information. I now understand that we should use the "unpublished work" box to prevent automatic publication to the web, but I find this an unintuitive solution.

Many of us handle information which is commercially, politically, personally or in other ways sensitive in our databases. My concern is that an "accident" is going to occur, and a naive user is going to inadvertently put extremely sensitive information on the net. This could have a potentially very negative impact on Mendeley's otherwise excellent brand and inhibit the takeup of Mendeley by individuals and organisations. That would be a tragedy - I am a great supporter of the Mendeley idea.

Charles Elworthytag:feedback.mendeley.com,2008-02-07:Event/113292952012-05-11T05:39:17-04:002012-05-11T05:39:17-04:00Provide information about web catalogue status in desktop document list
Charles Elworthy suggested:
Suggest information about the web catalogue status in the desktop document list, probably next to the "favorites", "read", and "file" columns on the left. This would improve the linkage between our personal libraries and the main Mendeley database and communities. Possible information would be "number of readers" or "number of groups using".
Charles Elworthytag:feedback.mendeley.com,2008-02-07:Event/113286862012-05-11T02:35:36-04:002012-05-11T02:35:36-04:00Allow selection of primary file for preview [updated]
Many of my articles have supporting information that I like to keep as a second file with the primary article. However, in a number of cases it has become the default file to open with Mendeley Desktop and I can't change it or reorder the files in any way. In addition, "my publications" which are uploaded to mendeley web have the same problem and the previews of almost all of my papers has defaulted to the supporting information file instead of the main text. Please implement some way to choose which file is primary and which is secondary.

Anonymous said:

This would also be helpful when merging duplicate files, although the files might be very similar, sometimes I wish I could open the second one externally by simple right clicking....

Anonymoustag:feedback.mendeley.com,2008-02-07:Event/113272202012-05-10T18:19:38-04:002012-05-10T18:19:38-04:00Add a Tab "References" beside Details and Notes and import the paper's bib so can instantly see cit [updated]
Having to scroll to the end of the paper to see numeric cites or new authors is SO time consuming as there's no link to each citation then easy way to get back to the cite in the paper

Ben said:

I posted a similar suggestion on the Mendeley advisor's group a couple of weeks back - I completely agree this is now one of my major qualms with reading papers on the pc (not just in mendeley). I have taken to printing out the reference pages at the end of the paper so that I can look at both the bulk text and the references. A separate references tab would be perfect, especially if the extracted citation information was displayed as a link directly to the paper online, eg DOI.

Bentag:feedback.mendeley.com,2008-02-07:Event/113254682012-05-10T13:39:50-04:002012-05-10T13:39:50-04:00add "Note" as a reference type
Nathan suggested:
Occasionally I need to write short footnotes in numbered Reference lists. I would like to see a Note reference type to facilitate this process.
It is possible to insert text as some other reference type and manually delete the "n.d.", but this gets tedious on multiple revisions.
This link summarises the process in Endnote:
http://library-resources.cqu.edu.au/learning-objects/libguides/EndNote/15e-formattingX4.pdf
Perhaps this has been suggested previously, or is already implemented by another name, but I couldn't find it.
Thanks!
Nathantag:feedback.mendeley.com,2008-02-07:Event/113252422012-05-10T13:08:43-04:002012-05-10T13:08:43-04:00Make it clear if Mendeley works with NeoOffice (Mac) or not. [updated]
Make it clear if Mendeley works with NeoOffice (Mac) or not. From a very few mentions, it seems like it does. For example, I'd like to be able to exclude groups with less than 10 papers.Tim Crombietag:feedback.mendeley.com,2008-02-07:Event/113239212012-05-10T10:04:33-04:002012-05-10T10:04:33-04:00Unsorted category within groups [updated]
Unsorted papers in the main library have their own category, but there does not appear to be an analogous category within groups.

Anonymous said:

This would be a very good feature and should be pretty easy to implement.

Usecase:
Search for new papers and quickly read them
Sort them in an appropriate folder E.g Simulation.
Simulation consists of several folders e.g Real-time and offline
but at this time you don't know which one to take.
After searching you want to read the newly added files about simulation.
But now you have to parse all newly added files, because it is not in the unsorted folder anymore.
It would be much more convienient to have a folder uncategorized in the simulation folder.
Of course this could be done manually but an automatic solution that searches all files in a category which are not a member of a subcategory would be more convenient.
