Should add existing metadata fields to the file rename tool.
You already extract pages, volumes, etc. Why not include this in the file renaming tool?
This has been raised with our Development Team and would probably coincide with work on the File Organizer.

Adding the ability to group papers into subfolders by, e.g., the first letter of the first author's last name would also be VERY useful to those of us with thousands of PDFs. I have 1177 folders in my papers directory and it is a pain to scroll to the one I need.

The drag and drop fields are great for simplicity but I agree with the BibDesk style formatting as an option. Currently for part I, II, III papers it just puts (2), (3) in the file name making the document appear to be a duplicate. Very annoying. Customization here would be excellent!

also an option to not use spaces, special characters, etc in filenames would be nice too. just the plain old A-Z a-z 0-9 - _ .

I would like the ability to put an et al. after the first authors Surname rather than a list of all the authors.

Anything which gives user more flexibility in the renaming protocol (particularly with a view to creating shorter file names) would be welcome.
Also, I want to be able to manually rename individual documents too.

Should add more metadata tags like other requests have suggested while simultaneously giving user control over content of each metadata tag. For example, I want to just extract the author's first name, or I want to format the title of journal article (e.g., only initials).

I agree totally, at the moment the file rename option is useless, until you can't really specify like: first author_year_title and that no commas, dots, empty spaces and special characters are allowed in the file name.
And that you have also an option, that only future added file names will be renamed.

File renaming with more options available is definitely necessary, e. g. journal volume, starting page... just customise it a bit. As for the journal abbreviations, you could always use the database jabRef is using for this.

The ideal implementation of this would be to allow the user to specifiy the character (or no character) to seperate fields. I won't allow Mendley to organise my files until this occurs. I have thousands of pdfs all named with no space ie surname2000.pdf. I don't want to change as the existing filenames are linked to other software such as my latex documents

This would be a great improvement of the file handling! Also avoid spaces, commas and punctuation and special characters is author names. A completely customizable folder and file renaming system like Vishal suggests similar to Bibdesk would be awesome!

It would be nice to be able to truncate file names, otherwise copy of the folder does not work properly in windows. It would also be great if we could choose to have some label in CAPITAL.

This is essentially a duplicate of "Should add existing metadata fields to the file rename tool" - vote there, please.

Please add abbreviated Journal names and TAGS in the file rename tool

I agree as well. It is annoying not to be able to organize files with Mendeley because it names files in this unclear way.

I completely agree. If this option is enabled, then I'll get Mendeley to organize my files.
