Mendeley Desktop is supported under Windows 8, but not Windows RT. If you’re planning to buy a Windows-based tablet and you want to run Mendeley on it, get one running Windows 8 (not Windows RT). We’re not planning to work on a ‘Metro’ app ourselves in the near future.

Have just tried Mendeley desktop on a 10" Windows 8 tablet. Interacting with it is very difficult via the touchscreen.

Please don't dismiss the idea of a metro app on the grounds that Windows RT is currently not very popular. A metro app will be very useful for Windows 8 tablet or convertible laptop too.

Does Mendeley know of any third party apps (current or in development) for Windows RT?

Does Mendeley allow third party apps?

I love the surface RT and I love Mendeley, would like to have both.

I would like a app, Mendeley please think about it. Is it too hard as third party plug ins are not allowed in windows office rt, then let us know (even if it was just a program what did not cite into word, would be great to have off-line PDFs searchable that better than web base mendeley search). I now searching for a referencing program to work with windows office RT....I love Mendeley. Hope things change

Mendeley, please wake up to see the demand and future. Windows RT and Metro apps are the future, just like iPad three years ago. Surface RT and other windows RT tablets are perfect for productivity with the built-in Office suites. It is perfect for me to work on the road. That's why Microsoft sold over 1 million within 6 months even with the overwhelming market penetration iPad has gathered in the past three years. I bought three Surface RTs and my 10-year old prefers his Surface to iPad when he needs to work on his homework and school projects. The 20-year old desktop interface will be history like DOS, modern natural UI is the future.

I used Mendeley during 5 years, paying a storage plan but I'm now using a Surface tablet and decided to stop my subscription because the software not user friendly. An app would help me to change my mind.

I have a Surface Pro, and I love taking notes on pdfs with the pen. Mendeley is not user friendly on the surface pro. I would love a metro app!

I am planning on purchasing a Surface Pro tablet. The stylus is a very interesting feature for me, to annotate and highlight on papers. Sure, I could use Mendeley's desktop version for this, but it wouldn't be ideal or a great interface for this kind of usage. I feel like it's a great opportunity for Mendeley to develop a Windows 8 metro app that fully uses touch and stylus. As a student I have (of get) to read a great number of articles each week, and it'd be fantastic to bring the convenience of Mendeley outside of my office.

I am a PhD student and found Mendeley to be the best reference manager and shocked to note that Mendeley is not supported in Surface RT. Surface is an excellent choice of Tab for research students more than iPad or Android Tabs as its comes with Word 2013 preinstalled. So pleeeeease consider lauching Mendely for Surface RT with plugins for Word 2013 at the earliest.

I agree. As the new owner of a Microsoft Surface I was hoping to use Mendeley as my primary reference tool. I too will be forced to find an alternative if there is no Windows RT version coming....

Mendeley team, be up your heels: Do you see how many people are not only shocked that you "are not planning to build a 'Metro' app for Windows RT in the near future" but directly ask for alternatives to Mendeley?

Instead of development focus on Android and iOS you should start working on Windows 8 apps - Where a majority of your users will sit in the very near future ... possibly without you.

Would also very much like to see a Mendeley Win RT app. If not forthcoming, does anyone know of alternatives that may support RT?

    Hello Tom,

You're right that Office for Windows RT does not support existing plugins or macros. I believe it does support 'apps for Office' though, which are a new kind of extension for Office 2013.

These apps are somewhat more limited in what they can do, so we've yet to look into how feasible a citation/bibliography app would be.

  • TomTom commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Unfortunately as the RT version of word does not support plug ins, the only purpose of a metro app would be to display essentially what is already online.. yes it is a shame, but i am not sure what we expect Mendeley to do about it..

With the Surface tablet being considered as the best productivity tablet in the market, I think Mendeley should seriously reconsider its decision of not developing an app for Windows RT. Although the iPhone/iPad Mendeley apps are free, I would be happy to pay for a Windows RT Mendeley app

I'm sorry to hear that, you're missing a lot of customers here. I do not need to buy a full Win8 machine since WindowsRT works just fine with Office, the only think I needed to be fully productive was a bibliographic tool. You're missing this unique chance to convert scientists to Mendeley, but other bibliographic tools will not miss it... I would say that in three years tops, an RT app will be more important for Mendeley than the Desktop program. Want to be late to that?

    Hello Daniel,

If you buy a tablet running Windows 8 Pro (not Windows RT), it will run Mendeley Desktop.

We are not planning to build a 'Metro' app for Windows RT in the near future.

  • Nirwan TajikNirwan Tajik commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Absolutely. Everyone outside art schools uses either a Windows OS or Linux distribution. Give us Mendeley on Surface RT - Because if someone has developed an app for RT before you, I'll switch.
