I suggest you ...

Import new entry using bibtex schema

import a new entry for publications AND / OR references using the full bibtex entry (as can be found e.g. on citeseerx).
This could be in the form of an additional tab with the full bibtex reference (cf. jabref)

Thanks for the workaround -- I'm not sure why such roundabout methods are still necessary considering that it seems like the code that can handle bibtex already exists.

As a recent newcomer to Mendeley, I have to say that for a reference management tool, I find the citation functionality woefully inadequate. The import bookmarklet always seems to get incomplete metadata from ieeexplore/acm even though these sites provide full-on bibtex entries. Also without any coherent functionality for importing a bibtex entry other than manually filling in the fields, it almost seems like more hassle than it's worth. So far the ability to add annotations in Linux is the only thing keeping me holding on to Mendeley.

May I propose a possible implementation:
        1. Besides the two tabs that appear for each paper (Details and Notes), a third one called BibTeX could be implemented to host only the Bib source (in editable mode).
        2. While exporting, in the Options->BibTeX tab, a check button should enable exporting BibTeX from the information that was inserted at point 1. If no BibTeX entry was provided at point 1, than use Mendeley's own BibTeX details (as it is the case now).

        Should work just fine !

@Martin B. - I agree with inserting it the way you presented, but there is no more control over the BibTeX data after that point. A very important step is exporting Bib files for LaTeX usage. The exporting function recreates the Bib Tex and sometimes the output is not the same as the input which was already a Bib TeX source (see Peter Yoachim's post below). Mendeley can not be used as the only tool to manage references, as its Bib output files need to be re-managed by other tools (e.g. JabRef). Hope to see this feature soon implemented. Other than that, Mendeley is really cool !

Actually - this is already possible by doing "Add documents" - and then just selecting a file containing BibTex data.. obviously it would be nice to be able to just paste a bibtex entry when importing "manually".. but in theory this is pretty much supported.

I can't understand how this is not supported yet - so many people/sites have publication data in bibtex format and importing those documents into Mendeley would be so infinitely much easier if this notation were supported. Hopefully this comes soon!

I just went back to Jabref for this feature. When I let Mendeley add a document, I end up with things like all caps on the title, author names with accent marks mangled, and full journal names rather than the bibtex command (e.g., "The Astrophysical Journal" rather than \ApJ).

I totally agree - this feature would be great!
In the rare occasion that Mendeley gets the meta info incorrectly, it would be great to be able to update it using a bibtex entry from the clipboard.

I would like to see this feature too!

Agreed! This would make importing my library of PDF's much easier, if I could copy paste the associated Bibtex entry for this article that I have already created.

Same as the others; this is basically the feature a miss most from many other linux reference managers (e.g. referencer, jabref). By the way, I think this software is great: an actual leap forward in the management of my papers!

I concur that this functionality would save me significant hassle. Can we get an update on when this might be released?

        I vote for this feature.
As bibtex entries are usually of better quality,
compared with the "import to mendeley" import feature", which may not correctly parse the web pages.
