Error: Unable to Contact Mendeley Web

Running mendeley 0.6.3 on ArchLinux gives an error when trying to sync:

``
Unable to contact Mendeley Web. Possible
reasons why this may have happened:

*Your proxy settings are incorrect. Go to the Proxy tab in the settings dialog to check or change your proxy setup.

*You are connected to the internet via a public wireless network which has a login page. Click here to open mendeley.com in your browser. Enter your login details if prompted and press 'Sync' in Mendeley to continue.
``

When running mendeley from the same computer inside a VirtualBox WinXP installation there is no such error.

I've tried the Ubunty Intrepid and Lenny packages, as well as the generic Linux one. They all give the same error. I don't typically need proxy settings for any other software and have checked that I am authenticated on my network.

Any further steps to debug?

    Hi,

I’ve changed the SSL setup on our servers, so you should now be able to connect with an unpatched openssl 0.9.8 with TLS extensions enabled.

        Hi Chris,

The preferred solution is to install libqt4-webkit and libqt4-svg packages, then restart Mendeley Desktop. This will make Mendeley look and interact better with the rest of the system as well.

Hi, I got exactly the same error after installing ubuntu 11.10...
On the terminal it gave a whole list of SSL errors, and on searching the web found that to be related to the version of libssl shipped with 11.10 to be too new, 1.0.0, whereas mendeley requires 0.9.8
libssl 0.9.8 was available in the standard repositories (through synaptic) and installed fine alongside 1.0.0.
It resolved the problem for me, so this may be a less download heavy solution or a solution for some people for whom don't have any luck with Sebastians solution.
So, for anyone confused by above
Load Synaptic Packet manager, find a package called libssl0.9.8, mark it for installation and choose apply.

Update: Installing qt4 in Ubuntu 11.10 makes mendeley sync again.

        (sudo apt-get install libqt4-core libqt4-dev qt4-dev-tools qt4-designer qt4-doc )

I'm getting the same error message. Since I have no idea what a proxy is/does, i don't know how to sync my libraries (from work to home). Any suggestions much appreaciated!

        I have a problem, because I use Fedora 14 openssl 1 ...

And proxy still doesn't work ;(

I have the same issue on a Windows 7 machine. The same proxy information that works in all my browsers and other apps (even Adobe Flex stuff) does not work when I enter it in Mendeley. It does not give any details on why, but it does not connect at all.

I'm getting this same error message on my Mac (10.5.7). At the risk of sounding like an idiot, how do I get my proxy info? I'm connecting via my home airport connection, and entering the log-in info for that does me no good. Sorry for the total n00bishness of my question.

Just in case anyone comes across this page because of issues with another (non-Mendeley server), I thought I'd note that fedora's SRPM contains a patch which prevents TLS extensions being advertised on SSLv3 handshakes, but keeps them in TLS handshakes (I.E. they still work on servers that support them, but don't trigger this server-side bug).

it works!!! I had to recompile openssl with the no-tlsext flag but now it syncs correctly.

        Thank you very much

Hi; are you all on archlinux? If so, what is your openssl version?

OpenSSL 0.9.8j and 0.9.8k are incompatible with SSLv3 on other certain other versions of openssl (including the RHEL supported version running on https://www.mendeley.com).

To confirm if this is the same issue, which out of the following work:

        echo | openssl s_client -host www.mendeley.com -port 443 -ssl3

        echo | openssl s_client -host www.mendeley.com -port 443 -ssl3 -no_ticket

Version 0.6.4 still doesn't fix the problem... I don't understand why they keep introducing new features when things as basic as synchronization still don't work (it's broken for everyone who uses linux in my department)

I've copied the proxy name that works on this browser into the Mendeley dialog - should I preface it with http:// or not (neither option seems to help).

This bug has left the desktop unusable on my main work machine. Everytime I start Mendeley now it tries to complete the uploading of PDFs only to fail, every time.
