Check for duplicates
Please add a possibility for checking for duplicates and not adding those/modifying the existing entries when importing! Especially please check for duplicates when automatic PDF extraction!
if it is possible than please add a new feature which can enable the user to remove papers which are in duplicate
thanks a lot
Mendeley 0.9 is successfully not importing duplicates into my library, but it can't recognize duplicate entries that are almost identical.
For example, it created an entry extracting metadata from a pdf file. Later, I imported a bib file which had the reference for that pdf and it created a new entry. Now I have 2 entries (1 from pdf extraction and 1 from import) that differ on the journal name (one is abbreviated, the other is not), and by the presence of a URL and citation key on the entry imported from the bib file. Also, the pdf extracted is linked to the file, the imported one is not.
So maybe Mendeley could check for possible duplicates (based on metadata differences) after import, and be able to merge fields on a custom manner (choose which fields will be override). Maybe completing empty fields automatically after comparing 2 possible duplicates.
Congratulations for new features, Mendeley is evolving fast!

Great news ! congratulations !
Hello Sascha, can you file that as a separate idea please, just so I know what I'm marking as completed when I change the status of a thread.
Please make it possible that if a "duplicate candidate" is checked as not a duplicate, the system will remember this decision.
Great news, I will try it out soon!
I love this feature! Is there a way to "Batch merge", as opposed to merging each set of duplicates individually, if there are multiple instances of duplicating? Thanks.
I added a new ticket for duplicates on shared folders, as this bug is still open :-(

Thanks a lot!
Hello - This thread combines a number of different issues. What we have implemented in Mendeley Desktop 1.0 is a tool to search through your library and find/merge duplicates. To use it, go to Tools -> Check for Duplicates.
I am marking this thread as completed now. Please open a new threads for any suggestions you have for improvements to the feature or unrelated duplicate document issues.
The development version* has this feature, the stable version does not. A new stable version with this feature will be out very shortly.
So is not clear to me. Does Mendeley have that feature currently or not?
Is a pain to have to export a bibtex to jabref, check for duplicates and import it back to mendeley!!!
This feature is working for me in the current development preview of 1.0.
I agree! This is one of the very few things I really miss from EndNote!

Find and remove duplicates is a MUST, in order to use Mendeley efficiently
