Mendeley only allows PDF files with DOI info. Why not make it also into an ebook organizer and file renamer based on ISBN info (either read form file name, or from document

That's really necessary. Such a feature is one of the very few making EndNote still relevant, with its Library of Congress ISBN search.

The argument that ISBN lookup is unsatisfactory is weird. Most of the books I've added to Zotero I did via ISBN. OK it doesn't work maybe 1 in 50 times and then I put in all the details manually - I can live with that for the sake of the 49 times it did work. If you wait for the world to become perfect before you act ...

Much needed, it's currently the only reason to still stick on Zotero...

Without a doubt the biggest barrier for users at my Uni to get started or convert from other reference managers. imperfection in import is indeed deemed tolerable

@Charlotte: With Amazon Web Services there is an almost complete ISBN database. You only need an Amazon Web Services Account. I think, that's a good alternative! Google Books also give very good results in applications like tellico (linux)...

It's perfectly true that ISBN lookup is not (yet?) all that it could be, as playing with some of the current tools will quickly show. (Frankly, you don't have to look hard to find provider-provided DOI errors either -- but, anyway ....). I am increasingly thinking that Mendeley might simply exploit various sources (e.g. multiple ISBN databases, DOI, Google, the in-house user-generated Mendeley database) to offer users CHOICES (e.g. "Does this look like your title? Your author? Etc.?") on how to fill in fields with automated assistance. That might actually be better in many cases than Mendeley's "best guess" (which is, of necessity, often predicated on someone else's "best guess").

There are a few of us here at Mendeley that want to get an ISBN lookup implemented for you guys, but unfortunately this is more complicated than it looks. There is no single complete ISBN database at present, unlike the DOI database, and so it's much harder to try to implement something like the DOI lookup. We will keep looking, and hopefully something should turn up soon. In the meantime, please accept our apologies for the continued inconvenience.

it was declined because it's duplicated.
you can help by moving your votes to the suggestion linked by mustaqil (on the top). it will rank the suggestion higher and move it up in the priority list. -

I would love this feature - why is it declined? I would also like an explanation over why this (and other features) are declined.

http://isbndb.com/ offers an API for the search of ISBN numbers, it would save me a lot of time if this could be implemented in a next patch...

Almost everybody agrees it is such a simple but useful function. Alas, it has almost been two years and not even a single response from development team.
