I suggest you ...

Allow download of PDFs directly from Mendeley Desktop

If a reference has an URL/DOI/PMID/etc., but no PDF yet associated with it, allow downloading this PDF automatically with a click from Mendeley Desktop.

Obviously only for freely accessible PDFs, and supported websites. This would work in exactly the same way as the bookmarklet import.

That option would really be great... I would like to import all available pdfs directly to my private library... not only from the desktop but also from the web importer!
As a first step, it would be sufficient to allow the upload of PDFs via the "add document" dialog.

this is crucial, it would make the whole mendeley experience smoother

This is the biggest problem of Mendeley, which needs to be fixed. Mendely has to be able to search for downloads which are accessible through my institution, get them and merge them with the appropriate citation which may already exist.

This would really put Mendeley on par with EndNote and would users much time hunting down PDFs. I'm sorry to see that it has not even been started....

This could go beyond freely available articles if there was the option to enter institution login details at the appropriate time to continue the download.

If mendeley is capable to do this, there'll be no market for QUOSA and stuff like that. Looking forward to seeing this feature in updates

Ooh yeah Scholar integration would be great - scrape metadata and get pdfs from there, try links so that any databases I'm already logged into can be used.

The simplest function would be to allow entering URLs to PDFs in the 'Add file' dialog...

Needs to be able to access full text from publisher web sites via institutional proxy servers, e.g. ezproxyhost.com.

Would love to see this implemented. It's frustrating to be logged in to the database, but not be able to automatically import the PDF associated with articles.
