Bug: Mendeley Desktop, Ubuntu 11.10, No internet connection detected - SSL problems?
I installed Mendeley Desktop (1.3) on Ubuntu 11.10 (32bit). When I start Mendeley, it just tells me "To join Mendeley, please connect to the internet", while the internet connection is there all the time.
What I tried so far (after reading through this forum):
- installed libqt4-webkit and libqt4-svg. No change.
- installed libssl0.9.8. No change.
- tried both mendeleydesktop --force-system-qt and mendeleydesktop --force-bundled-qt. Neither worked.
Here's the log from the "Test internet connection" button in the debug dialog (ctrl-shift-d):

What utter nonsense. suddenly a working program breaks. says no internet connection and installing those two packages doesn't help. And system internet works fine. Even other qt programs work.

Installing libqt4-webkit (through sudo apt-get install libqt4-webkit) worked for me; Thanks Markus! I'm running Ubuntu 11.10.

I too have done all of this:
- installed libqt4-webkit and libqt4-svg. No change.
- installed libssl0.9.8. No change.
- tried both mendeleydesktop --force-system-qt and mendeleydesktop --force-bundled-qt.
- been very patient
- tried multiple times over the past week
- asked the Mendley god (I am scientist, there is no god, but wait who would have created such a magical thing such as Mendeley without gods help, anyway...)So can I ask, does anyone have any further ideas about how to get Mendely to stop wanting to get to the internet when the internet is there already - on Ubuntu 11.10, running with 2GB of ram on an Acer laptop.

for me the following solution worked (taken from: http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/mendeley-programmstart-in-lubuntu-11-10-oneiri/):
first install libqt4-webkit (sudo apt-get install libqt4-webkit), then run mendeley again.
actually the mendeley-package should be installing this package as prerequisite. I consider this to be a bug, but one which is very easy to resolve.

I just have the same problem... I thought it was a last version bug (1.3), but I installed the 1.1.1 version and it didn't work... My OS is lubuntu 11.10 too...

Since connecting to Google works, it might just have been the case that the Mendeley website was slow at that point. I would suggest trying again at a later point.
