I suggest you ...

Organize files by collection

File Organizer in 0.9.0 only allows subfolders and renamed file names to contain Year, Journal, Title and Author data. I certainly want my collections to be in different subfolders as well!

It would be nice to have a mind-map to organize papers and form outlines on the fly. Similar to XMind but also for organisation by using the papers name.

Sub folder should at least reflect whatever sub folders created in Mendelely

I think one of the most strong feature of Mendeley is the file organizer; however, I do not think sub folders should be organize by any of suggested in the package now. It should be by something meaningful such as sub folders created by the user. For example, IT PMO, IT management, IT Adoption, etc.. Sorting it by year or any of what has been suggested means nothing to the researcher.

The "File Organiser" messes my whole library - Instead I want it to support me to keep my files, folders (and Subfolders) in order! Maybe even give the possibility to make new folder structures in Mendeley and change my Library folders accordingly.

People I see this is a long pending request - Please get going - I like Mendley but if it is like that I cant use it at my institute - go go go!

Almost 4 years and no changes or even acknowledgement. Some communication would be most appreciated

While this is clearly a widely desired feature (over 1000 votes, putting it in the top 20 most requested features /fixes at time of writing), there can only be two solutions (as far as I can see) to the issue of harmonizing file organization between Mendeley and the OS:

    1) File structure is mirrored between "folders" in Mendely and "folders" of the OS, with duplicates being resolved through a system of automatically created and maintained symlinks/aliases/whatever. This is perhaps the most intuitive system for users already accustomed to organizing things within hierarchies of nested folders in the OS, but perhaps also opens up the most possibilities for corruption or other errors. (Especially if files, etc. get moved around in the OS's file system, perhaps.)

    2) There is no direct harmonization of file organization as viewed in Mendeley and in the OS (Mendeley might throw all files in one directory as now, or organize them in some other semi-arbitrary way as done by iPhoto or to some extent iTunes), but Mendeley offers the option to "export" a group of selected files (individually selected, or "all in this folder", etc.) as a convenience to users who want to slurp a particular group of files out of Mendeley for some external purposes. (Rather mirroring the functionality of, say, iPhoto in this respect.) This avoids the problem of duplicates and/or symlinks, but probably offers a reasonable solution to what is the underlying "user desire" in this feature request: namely, easy ability to scoop out a particular user-defined group of PDFs for some external purpose.

While, along with probably many other users, the ready convenience of option 1 is attractive to me, though I can see good reasons why option 2 might be more practical to implement. Ultimately, however, the problem we currently face is the lack of either option. :( That is not so good -- nor is the fact that after 3 years this issue remains "under review". I can see that decisions would need to be made in order to come to some resolution, but it's hard to see why the decisions should take so long for what is, clearly, a widely desired (and quite sensible) feature.

to resolve this issue: i guess, it would not be difficult to leave all files in a unstructured way on the local disk like it is now and create a folder containing links (symbolic on unix-like os, .lnk files on windows) for all files within each folder in the local and group's libraries
for me at least this very simple extension would strongly increase the chance for Mendeley to stay my favourite reference/documents manager

I add my voice to those calling for this... I can't use File Organizer in its current state (as otherwise it will disorganise my library!). File by 'Library Folder' is essential.

Almost three years "under review", are you serious??? What a shame...

I understand the problem with duplicates. A very simple solution for me (when somoene asks for a copy of my files, for example) is to be able to export a folder from the library. This can't be difficult to implement, surely?

This is my most wanted feature. It is a shame that Mendeley doesn't have it.

Essentially my collections are messy in the current state. No sub-collection, no color labels ...

That's it...I'm done waiting. I have uninstalled mendeley desktop and I have now started using ZOTERO. I'm never going to look back at mendeley not even in distant future. At least at Zotero developers immediately listen and respond to the feedback. Yes, they do. I gave them a feedback and they worked on it instantly.

I would like to physically separate (in subfolders) papers on my reading list (tag= 2read) from the others that are already read and processed (tag=done). And to physically separate my collections. Allowing the use of tags to create new subfolders (and maybe assigning tags to the new saved pdfs) would be extremely helpful!

Definitely, current "file organisation" should not even be called as such.
For example, I need to be able to put publication year in square brackets so as the document name reads:
    [2008] Introduction to neurology

Also, if using article titles file names should respect the limit for the length of file name + path (i.e., combined 256 characters) on Windows operating systems.
