  Such a simple feature that has been long requested, I don't get it, I believe that this is not even that much too ask from ALL of us. ADD ANOTHER OPTION TO CREATE SUBFOLDERS UNDER 'TAG' OR 'COLLECTION NAMES'. Just one of the two at least, you don't have to fulfill both. It just doesn't make sense how this has been requested SOOO long ago and cannot seem to be completed. I personally think Mendeley's interface and features are among the best one can wish for, why not add such a simple feature to help all of us, pleeease!!!

  yes, at least create subfolders by tag, or by the corresponding folder in Mendeley

  Sorting currently works in a non-affordance way. If one sorts by author, but then decides to sort by year, the inner-sort (or second sort, or whatever you call it) is set to author as this was the last way of sorting.
  This is troublesome when in teamwork you decide to split the papers to be read to certain years/months, and you want to keep track where you by for example placing a star at the last read paper. The article with the star can shift in the list as different inner-sort methods are applied at various computers where previously on other attributes has been sorted.

  An easy solution is to create (dropdown) buttons that allow users to set the sort method like a drildown function (first sort on this, then this)
  This would also make integration of the below mentioned comments easy.

  Thanks btw. for a fantastic program (except for this issue) we're using it for a literature review of over 1200 papers and it proves to be great!

  Seeing all your positive and enthusiastic comments I wonder how such a technically simple feature can stay unresolvd since 2010... Would this feature be good for the business of mendeley? Hm... in the end they want to earn money as everyone else. And with this it naturally comes that they want to keep people with mendeley. Now, what do you do if you decide not to use mendeley any more? Mendeley is imo pretty much better than the other similar services. So if you want to quit, I bet you do not go to another one, but you would want to manage your pdf's yourself without any such system. And now it comes: for that you would put your files into directories according to topics. Now, this is exactly what this feature would do.

  (Pls don't misunderstand, I'm not claiming that any of the guys working at Mendeley thinks of this. I just say, that this feature would not necessarily help their business. And as long as there are few people for whom the features that help to leave a system are among the most important criteria when selecting a system, this will work like a trap. I just noticed this, now, too late: I have so many collections, I just would not have the time to rebuild all this in the form of directories...)

  I would like to physically separate (in subfolders) papers on my reading list (tag= 2read) from the others that are already read and processed (tag=done). And to physically separate my collections. Allowing the use of tags to create new subfolders (and maybe assigning tags to the new saved pdfs) would be extremely helpful!

  Absolutely. Brilliant idea.

  Additionally, I would go further to suggest that file organise/rename options are made more flexible.

  For example, I need to have files named:
  [year] Title
  that is, using square brackets around the year. Possibly also, [year.month] Title - with a four-digit year and two-digit month, with period mark between.

  So, +1 for flexibility in file sorting and file naming.

  Please this suggestion is a duplicate of http://feedback.mendeley.com/forums/4941-mendeley-feedback/suggestions/259141-organize-files-by-collection. Which it will make 1406 (824+582 at 13/01/2012) votes being within the ten top suggestions and it is one of the oldest on the list.

  Please, if a revision would not be scheduled, let us know in order to decide whether to stay with Mendeley or move to another database software.

  I think the thread starter is talking about subfolders on the hard disk, not in Mendeley (as robert.knight has stated below). Also, the most recent "anonymous" has a point as well. We need more file renaming options.

  Maybe someone posted this somewhere but I don't see it.

  A suggested work around for sorting your pdf files into subfolders. Within a collection, ctrl+a+right click; or ctrl+a then ctrl+e. Export to Endnote XML. This saves all the pdfs from the collection into a folder associated with the XML. Rename them using a file renaming utility.
