Allow file storage on any server.
I like the idea of syncing my library with a server, but find it undesirable to use Mendeley's. I understand that Mendeley is trying to run a business, but making your server side storage system more open really would encourage people like me to stick with your software. I don't like the idea of uploading my library to foreign servers.

Same demand here. My company does not allow the use of any external cloud based service. Especially now, after having learned about the Prism-programm, the number of restrictions in companies will most certainly rather increase than decrease. Being able to use a personal storage would make Mendeley the great software it deserves to be.

I think if you check the content of the library bib file, youwill understand how to modify it to relink your reference info and corresponding PDF files with Mendeley on another PC/Macs. Then you do not need the offical storage from your Mendeley account, but use external clouds as dropbox, box.net, GDrive etc..

Qiqqa apparently has introduced intranet syncing (recently, I guess, because I checked every now and then) which would supposedly meet industrial confidentiality policies. But one has to rent "premium plus" licenses on a monthly basis which are IMHO quite overpriced.
I could probably convince managers to agree on renting licences for a fifth of their offer or perhaps purchasing life-time licenses at the expense comparable to their 6-month fee. With their price-chart I'm not even trying to start negotiating internally.
But perhaps it helps one of the other desperate industrial researchers here or at least helps driving Mendeley to catch up on that topic.

As I posted before I work for a large corporation and use Mendeley for sharing and collaborating with colleagues. The corporation by policy now blocks sites via their proxy server which are deemed as 'network storage'. Alas, now in the office behind the firewall I cannot even reach Mendeley.com and of course cannot sync via the Mendeley https server. I have requested an exception but this is unlikely. My productivity has just taken a serious hit. PLEASE offer a solution for companies and users with private data or local storage needs!

I would gladly pay a one-time fee for an add-on to Mendeley desktop that allowed seamless integration with dropbox or other servers. Just throwing that out there.

This thread started at October 1, 2009. Everybody should definitely find another solution. Mendeley was a Great Idea with a Bad Management. Use Zotero instead

I was hoping that Mendeley would allow me to collect my papers on my local system, and then select the ones that go up to the server. For compliance reasons some materials cannot be uploaded, and yet I don't want to have separate document tagging solutions for secure and publishable documents.

... certainly also Google Drive should be one choice. Actually there are plenty of these online backup services - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_online_backup_services - some most flexible should be supported as already mentioned. E.g. which have Windows, Linux, Mac OS, smartdevices (Android, iOS, etc) support.

... and yes - own custom server should be possible to use! E.g. over FTP, SFTP, FTPS, SSH, WebDAV, etc. There would be even nice to have opportunity to set it up to use more than one source - e.g. Mendeley's one, cloud storage (e.g. Dropbox) and my own server. Or just one place - it should be also possible to decide, which place I would use as main storage space - Mendeley's one or anything else.

At the moment when I put my large (more than 2G) number of pdf's that I reference on Mendeley onto my ipad it crashes. It is less convenient, but if in the short term I can put my Mendeley on Dropbox, I can then access, read and annote on ipad (which is what I want my ipad for) and the dropbox can sync to the PC and Mac; where I do most of my work.

The whole freemium system is flawed and only leads to more and more sneaky strategies to make any project financially sound.
As long as Mendeley relies on cloud subscriptions for its support, they will not allow third-parties to compete. Because of this, users who are able to host the files themselves (webdav, ssh, whatever) will be kept hostage in this situation.
The only way out is to make Mendeley an open source software with binaries to purchase at real life price (to avoid falling in another non sense app 99cents ill fated system). Then storage options can be entirely outsourced.
As long as people want free as in beer software, things will get worse and worse.

@Lawrence
Zotero has been doing this via WebDAV for years with zero problems. No ability to use my sync server is the number one reason I don't use Mendeley.

Depending on the nations involved, privacy and intellectual property legislation can actually make the use of foreign servers a no-no. Allowing University's to host the server side storage for their users may be a good approach.

GEEEE, this is just unbelievable!!!!!!!
In this thread there are two distinct communities voting for this thread but both actually don't want the same thing in the end. Therefore I created a new thread so that it would be possible to distinct the (drastically different) requests... unfortunately I just had to realize that exactly that thread has been merged back into this thread!!!!!!!!! Great stuff folks.... really, great stuff.
This thread drives me crazy, sad and furious all at the same time... this is getting very very annoying for me. After all the time I spent watching out for ANY suitable tool for our team and waiting for Mendeley to address this exact issue (well, not THIS one, but the one I described ion the thread which has intelligently be remerged to this thread again) I seriously consider starting an open source project (yes, yet another bibliography tool) which minimally suits our needs.

I agree, I would switch to Mendeley for bibliographic storage if I could use my own server to sync files to, but my organization will not allow cloud storage and I do not want to store my data in the cloud either. That's why I pay for a server. This is the only problem that stops me switching from Zotero to Mendelay. Mendelay has the advantage for me of an ipad app, but I cannot justifty the security risk of cloud storage.

If the automatic synchronization is an issue to you, you can switch it off globally and re-enable for folders so that only the documents that you want synchronized are synchronized.
