Office 2010 64 bit plugin

Since Mendeley desktop is not working for the 64 bit version of Microsofts Office 2010 TP, it would be great to build a version of Mendeley Desktop compatible with the 64 bit version of Office 64 bit as soon as possible. The beta phase of Office 2010 is start very soon (November) and that would be a great opportunity to test Mendeley Desktop for this Office version as well.

When I click on "Add Citation" I get "Add new source" & "Add new placeholder", neither gives me option to search my mendeley library. So how do I "import" the library in word? So I can search authors/titles etc?

    Thanks

For 64 bit user, You can find plug-in button at

File > option > user setting for ribbon > all commands

Then, only you have to do is creating new tab and group for add plug-in button.

But I can't reflect settings changed in Mendeley Desktop itself as below post.

    I use Mendeley Desktop 1.8. I can't change citation style !
    Modifications aren't reflected unfortunately.

I can change active style to ACS style on Mendeley Desktop itself.
But then, I cite an article on MS Word using plugin, style does not change.
There is no document number (scripted in style information on Web),
    only author and published date.

The newest version of Mendeley is 1.7.1. Have you tried that?

I notice there is a comment below about a word count problem with references in Word when using Mendeley. I have Office 2010 64-bit and the most up-to-date version of mendeley (downloaded a couple of weeks ago). When I look at the word count for my document it is huge - because it counts every reference inserted via mendeley as a few hundred words! As I am currently writing to a specific word limit this is a major problem, and unless I can find away round it by the end of today I will be uninstalling mendeley and using an alternative reference manager. I cannot believe someone pointed out this problem back in April (Alejandro, below) and you still haven't bothered to deal with it. It doesn't give me much faith in Mendeley and what I really want more than anything is a reference manager I can trust.

I am working with the 64 bit version of Microsofts Office 2010 and I have got an error when I try to insert bibliograph. A "File Converter" window shows and when I choose an option the text marker show up wrong like this: ibliography} without {B at the beginning of the marker. What is happening and how can I solve this problem. I can't insert citations because of it.

  • AnonymousAnonymous commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Wow. Talk about missing a window of opportunity! I held out for over a year and a half but finally had to break down and buy EndNote two months ago.

Papers for Windows is also looking pretty good now too.

Hello - We've enabled the auto-update to 1.5.1 with the new Word plugin for all users.

Thank-you to everyone who helped with testing. If you encounter any problems with the new plugins, please report them at http://support.mendeley.com

Although we have tried to do a decent amount of testing with the new plugins, if you're using 1.3 without problems and have a deadline coming up in the next few days, you may wish to wait until after then to update.

Apologies that it took us a while to get support for 64bit Office done, thanks for being patient.

    Hello Alexey,

Can you report the problem on support.mendeley.com - it is easier to keep track of problem reports there.

Can you please also provide the following info:

    1. What version and language of Microsoft Word are you using?

    2. Can you reproduce the problem in an empty document? Does uninstalling and re-installing the plugin from Mendeley Desktop make any difference?

    3. Do you have 'Track Changes' or other reviewing features turned on?

  • Alexey BadalovAlexey Badalov commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Mendeley version 1.5 prefixes the bibliography with the line "ibliography}".

Why won't Mendeley just use the built-in bibliography feature in Word? It already has a large variety of styles and works so much better. All I want is an easier way of adding references to it.

  • Alexey BadalovAlexey Badalov commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

In version 1.5, pressing "refresh" or choosing a style inserts a new bibliography at the cursor position, instead of refreshing or changing style. Inserting bibliography displays the "convert file" dialog, cancelling out of which errors out with "command failed in Microsoft Word".

  • SalSal commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

can you give me an idea on when 1.5 will be relased, thank you very much.

Hello - We have released another 1.5 update, 1.5-dev5 which fixes several Windows Word plugin regressions. This is due to be the final preview before the stable 1.5 release.

    Hi Alejandro,

Thanks for the report. I haven't tried to reproduce yet but '325 words' would almost certainly be for the field code and not the visible field text (which is what should be included in the word count).

  • AlejandroAlejandro commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

I would like to point out the word count for Office 2010 64-bit (Mendeley most recent beta version) is weird.
Some references (E.g. (Weisz & Argibay, 2009) = 325 words!), please look into it. It may have something to do with abstracts being included in the field codes of the reference.

    Dear Robert
Occasionally I get the same problem - Mendeley simply won't insert the citation (I reckon this happens like 3 or 4 time out of every ten insertions). It does not really matter if I am quick with the insertion or not (i often opt to wait for a few seconds before I click on the OK button) and it does occur on both mouse / touchpad or keyboard. Mendeley won't crash though, so I wonder if a log file might help on this. If yes, I have no problem in sending it to you right away.

As for the merging of citations - this would also work on trying to insert multiple citations from the insert window. But occasionally this fails and Mendeley would then crash. I found merging citations after insertion (using the "merge citations" key on the MS Word plugin) reliable and consistent, and does not result in the Mendeley crashing. Hope this info helps.

One word of caution: if a document becomes exceedingly long and involving a great number of citations, I suggest you split the document and then join at a later stage. Mendeley can handle better a smaller number of citations. I'm currently working on a literature review with 200+ cited pieces and it takes ages to insert and amend. I split the document and it works so well.

    Manny
