Open file externally by default
User should have the option to open all files externally by default (i.e. double click a file, it opens in Adobe or Foxit or whatever).
This has been logged with our Development Team for consideration in a future version.

I completely agree that this should be implemented. It is indeed unbelievable that there has been neglected for so long. Please make this happen.

I thought I had this function in earlier versions of Mendeley. I'd also like to be able to select the program I use. I'm on the Mac and want to use Skim instead of Preview.

Yes, please! Hard to believe that this request has been ignored for almost 3 years.

In additin, the "open file externally" function works only if the pdf file is a local drive. It would be nice to be able to use it if stored on the intranet.

Strongly agree. It is more easy to edit and make comments with external pdf readers such as Adobe Professional.

Or at least incorporate the option to do this by default -

Seconded. Like the others, I prefer to use my external PDF viewer, and I find it annoying that I need to open the documents via the context menu.

Still not integrated in Mendeley, even though it would be incredibly easy to do! Give us the freedom to use our own PDF viewer and implement "open externally by default"! And no, I do not want to hold down any key before double clicking as this would just be another thing to remember.

So, to dissipate any confusion with the other feature request, here I mean "changing the default option to view pdf in mendeley (wether internally or externally)", as the author of this suggestion proposes.

Nothing new about changing the default pdf reader ?
Mendeley is awesome but it is really annoying to have to go through the context menu to use my regular pdf reader. I want to have the choice of the default option.Aaah, if Mendeley was open source, it would have been fixed by now... :p

Agreed. I also think the ability to set the default PDF reader for mendeley is important (http://feedback.mendeley.com/forums/4941-mendeley-feedback/suggestions/216079-ability-to-set-external-pdf-viewer) I have multiple PDF viewers one light weight and quick for most PDFs and one with good annotation features for academic papers.

Please add this option! I never use the internal pdf reader.

Please add this option - it's super easy for you to implement and would make Mendeley so much more useful for me.

I strongly agree with Melvin! I usually open a dozen pdf files at work, and I would prefer to use an external viewer by default rather than in the relatively smaller Mendeley window.
But I am overall happy that Mendeley is doing awesome work. If I can totally rely on Mendeley to organize my files, I don't even need to worry about renaming files like "sdarticle" to a legitimate name after downloading, since Mendeley will automatically search the name for me.
Right now since the default pdf reader in Mendeley is not my best option, I do not feel comfortable enough to totally rely on it yet.
