Manually edit citation styles in Mendeley Desktop
There should be a way to manually edit the citation styles in Mendeley Desktop, preferably in a WYSIWYG editor.

@ananymous, read this:
https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/wiki/Requesting-StylesIt refers to Zotero (whose community is more active in creating and contributing styles than Mendeley's) but Mendeley uses the same repository that Zotero uses.

I have tried Mendeley since 3 month... it is great... Really useful except to publish... I do not find my bibliography styles even for journal from the same publisher (Plant ecology)... It is enough, i am tired... I come back to endnote.

If a manual citation style editor is ever implemented, custom styles should also be synced with the mendeley account.

In case you are looking for one urgently, Qiqqa has a built-in CSL editor that lets you look at your style edits on-the-fly. It is not WYSIWYG, but it does let you see changes to (and avoid mistakes in) your CSL by updating the example bibliography on-the-fly.

This is sad... this started in 2008, now it's 2012. Is there any timeframe for completion?

It's good to hear some news on this front (and very pleased it will be made open source given that Mendeley has benefitted from open-source Zotero code in the past).
But does this mean a useable editor is still a long way from completion? I had been hoping that something would be available early this year.

Well this is neat. Mendeley is teaming up with Columbia University to create a citation style editor. Sounds like it is a much harder problem than one would assume.

It is SO crucial that I am able to add reference page numbers to in-line citations and that I can add notes to the references because I deal with a lot of unpublished documents and special reports. Mendeley is by far my favorite reference manager but I cannot utilize it until I am able to do these quite basic things. Thanks for working on this problem!!!

Something like an easy connection with a desktop wiki (like Zim)? It could improve annotations features a lot!

It would be helpful until Mendeley CSL editor comes up. -

First post is over 2 years old and still no solution! This is pretty shocking. Everyone keep your eyes open for readcube. Theres a Beta version out atm which is pretty sweet but it doesnt yet permit referencing, meant to be coming along soon though!
Hurry up Mendeley

kabarga - Editing a citation style use abbreviated titles journal names is simple, but first you need to have implemented a "hack" (see journal abbreviations thread) for Mendeley to use abbreviated titles otherwise the style setting will get ignored.

i understand how can i change small things in custom style. But i need to use abbreviation of Journal names such as Nano Lett. instead of Nano Letters and etc... that is more difficult task and i didn't find any citation style which i can use. I can modify it manually, but then i have to check each abbreviation one by one - and not all abbreviations is well known.
what to do in such case?
