Make Mendeley Desktop portable (for USB Drive)
It would be great if Mendeley Desktop could be a portable application that can be run from a USB hard drive or stick.
A version of Mendeley Desktop for Windows which can be installed on shared computers without admin rights is available from http://s3.amazonaws.com/com.mendeley.download/Mendeley-Desktop-1.5.1-win32-NonAdmin.exe
This is not a full ‘portable’ version that stores everything on a USB pen, but it may help some users.

An excellent idea, and I will add to the voice of those having to deal with IT staff every time an update is released.

Interesting point from @mikey; as it happens, my university has also been tightening up control of desktop PCs (they don't trust us!), and I've had to harass the IT people every time I want to update Mendeley Desktop. They may or may not eventually get sick of me doing this .... But being able to run entirely from a USB drive would get me around this problem (as long as I can find a big enough USB drive for my library! :))

I don't now for mendeley desktop portable but I have a portable usb stick from http://etoolsonline.com/my-rig/ and it is great. Everithing you need is on your usb and is very secure too. Great for mobile users and people who don't use their own PC's. Very good support too. Mendeley is great and I want it on usb.

This and private servers are the two biggies that prevent me from using Mendeley. I also use Linux and Windows, so cross-platform would be nice. So frustrating. Any ETA?

Hi Robert,
I mean that I use Linux at home and Windows at the institute. I need that the portable library would be adequately handled by both of them. May be it is obvious that such functionality is important, but I just wanted to remind you about it. -

Hi Vitaly,
What do you mean by 'cross-platform thing'?

yes, I'm also worried about that cross-platform thing. For me it is critical.

I'm glad to see this feature has "started". USB drive sizes are growing even faster than my library, so it will soon be feasible to keep my "live" library on a USB stick. Now what I'm wondering about is cross platform stuff: presumably people running Mendeley on different platforms will need a copy of two or more installations of Mendeley on a given USB drive ... Will different installations of Mendeley for different platforms on the same drive be able to use the same library directory without getting everything horribly confused? Will the "watched" directory have to be the same as the "library" directory to catch files added when running on different platforms?

I would suggest that you develop it together with people and developer from Portable Apps. Seeing how Open Office is available for Portable Apps, it is possible that Mendeley Desktop will be able to be incorporated into Portable Apps as well. Though the name might become Mendeley Portable instead.

I'm dissapointed that this feature is being delayed although has been a top demand from users for many months.
Anyway I will keep waiting, I believe that this "Feedback" site was done for a reason and you appreciate the needs of the users.

Hello Made,
No updates on this at the moment I'm afraid. We did some work on a portable version a while back but there is a big difference between something that sort-of-works for playing around with internally and something we can actually release and recommend that people use.
I believe we will return to this in future. However, we will also flesh out the functionality of the website, so for some people, that may provide the features they need if using say a public computer briefly for research.
Regarding something Stuart Simon mentioned a couple of months ago, the Windows version of Mendeley Desktop does store some settings in the registry, though most of the data is stored in your local application data folder (under %APPDATA%).
