There are several different issues being mentioned in this thread. For MD 1.6 we added the ability to make per-citation customizations in Word/LibreOffice documents – including setting page numbers and other kinds of ‘locator’ within a larger work. Click on a citation in the citation editor window to set options for a citation. If your votes were for a different issue that is not yet addressed, please create a new issue or vote for an existing one.

I love the feature where I can add page numbers to citations. But instead of them appearing in the inline citation, is it possible that they appear in my blibo? So say I have I use pages 400 and 593 from a book, and I indicate these by editing my citations.

But instead of them appearing (Mitchell, 1989, p.400) and (Mitchell, 1989, 593), I want my inline citations to look like (Mitchell, 1989), without the page numbers, but my bibliography entry to look like: Mitchell J (1989) I love peas. Random Publishing company pp 400, 593.

I have removed the page variable from my inline citations already, but adding a page variable to my biblography does not quote "400 and 593" but instead quotes the value in the "pages" entry of the "Details" tab of the document. Is there a way to rectify this?

    Editing Citations Styles:

    @ John:

Had the same Problem this video helped:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rgb0Ldb6LhM

If you take the asa-style as the guy in the video does,
just replace the ":" in <group delimiter=":"> by ", S. " and you will get what you want.

Thanks for this long outstanding feature. To access it click on "Edit Citation" or Alt-M, to access the citation editor window, and then select the citation you wish to edit (usually only one which you can select using the "Home" key) where you can add the page number (paragraph, verse etc), prefix, suffix and/or suppress the author.
Is it possible to add an "Inline" citation feature (checkbox) that cites as follows "Mendeley (2012)" as opposed to "(Mendeley, 2012)".
    Thanks

    Hi,
Unfortunately not; this seems to be coded, and I have not seen a way to change it.

Thank you, finally I got it :)
Another question: is it possible to add a option in the page box? I'm writing in German, so I want the page reference look like this: "(Pineda 2000, S. 12)" (instead of "p. 12")

Here are the detailed steps you really need to do in order to be able to add the page number:

    1. First indeed add a citation in Word.
    2. In Word, click inside the citation; it becomes grey and you should see in the Mendeley toolbar that “Insert Citation” becomes now “Edit citation”; so click on it.
    3. A small box opens with this text select in blue: “Search by author, title or year in xxxx”; replaced it by the name you can read from the citation you selected in step 2.
    4. The appropriate paper is found and highlighted in blue; and it is crucial to click on the blue part highlighting the paper, otherwise it won’t work.
    5. Then, it returns back to the box you had in step 3 with a text similar to this: “Pineda 2000;Search for additional reference”. The last part: “Search for additional reference” comes selected and highlighted in blue. And here is now the trick to make the page box to appear: you need to click on your paper reference appearing in this line: in my case it was Pineda 2000; it is only by clicking it that the box with the different options appears: page number, a prefix that will appear after the opening bracket and the suffix that will appear before the closing bracket.

if you set page numbers and then have to merge the citations, the page number disappear!!

The new option in 1.6 works but accessing it (click on citation) is hardly an obvious thing to do (as some comments below indicate). I had to come here to figure out how to access it.

Why not just put a "more options" button on the citation editor as a method of expanding it to reveal the extra options?

    Hello gdegraaf,

The option is available for both Word and OpenOffice. Click on a citation in the citation editor window and the options to customize the citation will appear beneath the selection field.

I have 1.6 dev 4 installed, and am working with the openoffice plugin in openoffice 3.2.1 I don't see any possibility to make these per-citation customizations. I did uninstall and re-install the plugin. Is there no support yet in openoffice or am I overlooking something?

I just installed the 1.6 version to make use of the new feature to add page number to citations. After installing the new mendeley desktop and unistalling and reinstalling the add-in from the tools tab drobdown in the mendeley desktop, the feature now works perfectly! I use windows 2007 with office 2010 professional plus. Good job mendeley!

Will there be a solution for this issue for LaTex/Bibtex users as well?

  • JohnJohn commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

I dont't know what I am doing wrong. I even formatted my hard drive and installed office (office 2010) and mendeley (1.6dev) again. Where is the option to customize the citation in the word plugin?? Can anybody show me a screenshot? Please help, I really need this...

Actually ... thank you guys. Just installed 1.6 and after a bit of hassle getting the plugin to reinstall in Word its now working like a treat and page numbers are appearing as I need them to. Word 2011 (14.2.2) and OSX 10.7.4
This is going to really help and I appreciate your efforts. Was scratching my head for a bit and delighted this seems to be resolved. Looking forward to the stability release as my next deadline is looming large on the horizon

    Hi John,

After selecting a citation, click on it in Mendeley's citation editor and the options will appear. To add page numbers to an existing citation, select it in Word, click 'Edit Citation', select the citation in the editor and the options will appear.

I've installed Mendeley 1.6-dev2 but I can't find the new citation options. I reinstalled the Word Plugin und Mendeley itself. Can you give a short tutorial, please?
