  1. Inconsistent use of initials by same author, initials in citations

I suggest a warning appear to say that there's a similar author already stored in your library and to ask if they're the same person.

This will help stop Mendeley putting initials in front of authors' names in in-text citations.

Authors can be inconsistent in their use of their own initials and names. This may be due to differing requirements by different journals. However, it creates a problem in Mendeley because Mendeley ends up treating them as different authors unless manually altered. This means when citing different works by the same author in one text Mendeley will insert the different…

  3. Improve highlighting function

Mendeley is great~ However, when I am highlighting some words or sentences, sometimes, words far below are highlighted. I am mostly reading scientific articles.

  4. Mendeley for Maemo (Nokia N900)

Nokia N900 is a powerful smartphone based on Maemo Linux. Maemo applications are very similar to Linux desktop applications, they use GTK, etc. so to make a new interface for the N900 should not be very difficult, based on the already existing linux client. Applications for Maemo should also work in the future on MeeGo, the union of Maemo and Moblin (supported by Intel and Nokia).

  5. Fix pdf highlight bug

Some areas in a pdf cannot be highlighted. Either nothing is highlighted, or a region some lines below or in a nearby figure are highlighted instead.

This bug has been mentioned here before, but it was marked as "fixed" which it is definitely not! So please give this a vote if you have the same problem.

    I'm using 0.9.8.2 on Mac OS X 10.6.5.

  6. Sync Zotero SUBFOLDERS, not throw all together

Users who have all their Zotero-data in sub-folders find that Mendeley merges all subfolders when syncronising. That destroys much work for any Zotero user with a large library who wishes to switch to Mendeley.

  7. Create an MSI installer so that departments can install an update all computers over a network

This would allow many university departments that don't allow staff admin rights to their PCs, access to Mendeley and Mendeley updates.

  8. Annotations: Cleaner, simpler display in notes pane; Categorization/Tagging; Colors

I am trying out Mendeley for the first time, and mainly came to it while looking for a (more) cross-platform alternative to Skim (for Mac). Skim is an excellent PDF viewer with strong and highly customizable annotation features. Mendeley is a far stronger bit of software since the last time I looked at it, and the inclusion of a PDF viewer and annotation is a big step up. Nice work.

There are a few improvements that would make Mendeley's annotations much better (from my perspective):

    1. Clean up the Notes pane (perhaps as an optional setting)

    1.1 Replace the…

  9. Spelling check

An option to initiate spell check in the documents to ensure that your entries are correct.
This will help when you are also searching within notes.

  10. watch folders after crash

Watched folders is a great idea - however when Mendeley crashed, restarting it automatically removed the Watch Folders links. On trying to recreate the Watched Folders, Mendeley appeared to start adding all my pdfs again - I cancelled rather than get 900 pdfs duplicated, so don't know how this worked out in the end...

  11. Add bookmarklet support for patent websites

Lots of patents are only available in scanned format, requiring manual data entry.

I'm mostly interested in US patent sites:
    http://patft.uspto.gov/ <OR>
    http://www.google.com/patents

But others might want international sites:
    http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/
    http://ep.espacenet.com/

  12. tooltip showing the reference details while reading a PDF

It would be very helpful to have a tooltip showing the details of a reference while hovering over it in the PDF (e.g., hovering over "[1]" in the text shows a tooltip with author, paper title, etc.). It would no longer be necessary to scroll down to the reference section to look up the corresponding reference.

  13. Page Up/Down

There needs to be a way to read a PDF in Mendeley without the mouse. Usually this is done with Page Up and Page Down. However, in Mendeley's PDF viewer, these keys move to the top of the next or previous page. Instead it should behave like all reasonable Page Up/Down implementations and scroll by how much is viewable on the screen.

In another words, it should be possible to read the entire document just by hitting page down. If this is a problem, use Space for Page Down and Shift + Space for Page Up to mimic web browsing.

  14. Mind Map

A lot of research projects or paper start of as a brainstorming diagram. It would be useful, especially for those of us who learn more visually, to have an application where papers can be organized into a sort of mind map. A useful extension of this would be to allow the mind map to be shared and edited by others.

  15. Add entry manually by bibtex

it would be nice if you could improve the "Manually add entry"-feature with a bibtex-parser, so Bibtex could be imported over clipboard and not only with a bibtex-file.

  16. use DOI to spot and merge duplicates from citeulike sync

At the moment, when syncing from citeUlike, documents with that come in, that have a DOI that matches a document already in my Mendeley library, get duplicated. It should be very straightforward to spot the DOI duplication and merge the info: at least, to import any tags and notes, and ask the user about any other inconsistencies

  18. localization of CSL terms (e.g. "pp", "eds")

Unlike zotero, Mendeley is not able to localize CSL-terms that are used within the citations as well as the bibliography and aim to support multi-language-CSLs.

Terms like editors, pages (pp.) etc. are displayed in english if the citation style uses text terms. The only workaround to date is to edit the csl and hard-code the right terms for your native language (e.g. in german "S. " instead of "pp. " or "Hrsg.: " for "eds.") - making it only usable for one language.

  19. Improve support for diacritics in BibTeX

This is related to a post below on BibTeX import, but regarding BibTeX export. If, say, an author's name has diacritics (like, eg., Ştefănescu), Mendeley does not export these correctly -- the relevant characters come out as gibberish, rather than \c{S} and \u{a} (accented characters, eg., á, come out correctly, ie., \'{a}). The only way round this problem is to turn off escaping of LaTeX characters, and make sure everything is already escaped in Mendeley, which looks awful and is sort-of self-defeating. Importing messes up LaTeX-encoded entries, so everything has to be corrected by hand. Please fix this!

  20. Make it work with MS Word 2008 for Mac

I just installed Mendeley desktop and it looks wonderfully promising but entirely useless to me while the plugin for MS Word 2008 Mac is not functional.
