Integrate Mendeley with Evernote
I don't know exactly how this should work, but this would be awesome. Think
- sync annotations
- have things both in Evernote and Mendeley
- sync and relate excerpts911 votes -
Ability to create custom Document Types
Different people care about different types of documents. Instead of trying to add every possible type centrally, it would be useful if users could add new document types and rename / delete existing ones.
839 votesThis is on our roadmap for this year. It’s a two step process. First we need to replace the hard-coded document types in Mendeley Desktop, and their field mappings to a more flexible system that reads from a standardised config file. This can then be shared between Desktop, iOS, and third party applications. Once this is in place, then we plan to update the document types to be in line with EndNote’s supported types, as well as consider suggestions for other popular reference types.

Remember open tabs and position within PDFs
When closing Mendeley, have the option to remember the current open PDF documents and also the scroll position you're currently at within the PDF. Similar to what Firefox does with open tabs and what PDF viewers when re-opening a PDF doc.

Allow italic formatting in metadata
Species names must be italicized yet no character formatting is allowed when manually editing the metadata. This request is especially important for the Title and Keyword fields. When exporting the citation, the italic formatting should be maintained.
763 votesAlthough it is possible at the moment (use < i >italics text< / i > without spaces) it is not very intuitive. Our developers are aware of this.

Introduce Ebook isbn resover
Mendeley only allows PDF files with DOI info. Why not make it also into an ebook organizer and file renamer based on ISBN info (either read form file name, or from document

Pen tool for annotations
Make a pen tool for drawing free-hand annotations in the built-in pdf reader. Or at least make tools for making circles and arrows. I love drawing on my pdfs!

manually manage "types" to make them coherent with bibtex. e.g. "incollection"
currently many mendeley types are "translated" into @misc while many bibtex types do not exist (e.g. incollection). Please, insert a function to manually associate mendeley types to bibtex types or any function to better manage the typology of the exported bibtex.
624 votes@incollection is currently mapped to ‘Book Section’.
Our Developers are aware of this request and are hoping to implement such changes in the future.

save highlighted text to notes
Or to a new section so I will have a possibility to take a look at all highlights in one place
623 votesThis has been logged with our Development Team for possible inclusion in a future version.

Improve bibtex import
While I don't expect a full LaTeX parser, bibtex import could and should be improved. At the moment, I have many entries in Mendeley with stuff like that:
Title: {\"U}ber M{\"a}rchen -- Tolkiens Sicht des Phantastischen
Mendeley should recognize this kind of encoded umlauts and typical LaTeX stuff like -- for long dashes.
593 votesI have opened a ticket to look into the way Mendeley Desktop behaves when exporting accented characters to BibTeX. We will also look into improving BibTeX export in Mendeley Desktop in general.

Smart categories
Create "smart" categories (like Papers software, on MacOS) that would search (with logical operators) for keywords within (selectable) author, title, abstract fields and automatically populate the categories with found articles, without manual intervention. Smart Categories cannot be populated manually and they can coexists with normal categories.
544 votesThis is something that we have discussed: we have a ticket open related to this one for a ‘Saved Search’ option which you can use to search for files by clicking a saved search criteria.
Additionally we have a ticket open for a ‘Recently Viewed’ option under a different ticket. If this is the feature you are voting for, please vote here instead: http://feedback.mendeley.com/forums/4941-general/suggestions/220568-recently-opened-documents as this forum is only for Smart Categories/Saved Search.

make the annotations searchable!
I am using the 0.9.4.1. I found the annotations were unsearchable. It would be very nice if we can search the annotations we made.
510 votesWe are aware that this is quite requested and are looking into hopefully including this ability in a future version of Mendeley.

Mendeley’s plans for annotations extend well beyond what native PDF annotations are capable of. Things we’re exploring are better controls over privacy in groups, allowing public annotations that are searchable and discoverable (possibly recommended?) as well as data table and figure extraction, semantic entity extraction, and threaded conversations, integrated with group newsfeeds.
I know a lot of you are voting for this because you want a better reading experience on your tablets. iOS users will be getting annotations (and a much better reading experience overall) very shortly, and a robust API will be made available shortly afterwards for third parties to take advantage of.
Import/Export of these in some fashion is something we’ll want to investigate for sure, but we don’t want the existing spec to limit the scope of the value this could bring our users in future.

Make Mendeley compatible with Scrivener
It would be great if Mendeley worked with Scrivener for writing large bodies of work, like books, dissertations etc. I'm about to start a Ph.D. and thinking I will have to stop using Mendeley and export all my references to a referencing system that is compatible.

Insert citations and bibliographies into Google Docs
Find a way to insert citations and automatically generate bibliographies (just like with the Word Plugin) in Google Docs.

Manage PC/Kindle files
Because the Kindle doesn't have file management, it becomes a huge hassle to store >100 pdfs on there. It would be great if Mendeley had a devices section. That way when my Kindle is connected I could move files on and off it, i.e., manage what's on there. This could work just like managing the songs on an iPod with iTunes. I imagine that it could be implemented pretty easily since the Kindle can be used as a USB drive when it's attached.
This would be pretty simple, and when combined the ability to push metadata into the pdfs (as…

Specify schema for automatic BibTex key generation
I would find very useful if it was possible to specify a schema according to which Mendeley should generate BibTex keys. For example
[author][1]:[journal]:[year]:[title][5]
(the first author and the first five words of the title). Right now I generate my keys with JabRef, it would be nice to do it directly in Mendeley.

Add typical PDF view and navigation options
Mendeley should have typical view and navigation features of regular PDF viewers, like:
1) view - zoom - fit to page
- fit width
- fit height
- fit visible
2) navigation:
- go to page number (I can't believe Mendeley can't jump to page numbers, I have scroll through the whole document! Or am I missing something?)
- go to next / previous / first / last page option as buttons in Mendeley's toolbar
- scroll down the page by hitting space bar.In other words: Mendeley's PDF browser should have all view/navigation features of Adobe Reader.
427 votesAs robert.knight says, this is an ongoing change we are making to the PDF viewer: addressing each point:
1) We are able to zoom, but not fit width/height/visible. This has been noted to our Development Team.
2) This is possible through the ‘Go’ menu in Mendeley. -
Linking related papers/references
Link related papers e.g. response to a paper, or a comment on an important trial can be linked to the main paper. It would be useful to have this information analyzed by the Mendeley servers, if enough users link related papers, and then other uses may be prompted that a certain paper is related to another one(s).
419 votesOur Developers are aware of the request and are looking into how to implement such a change, although we suspect it would be a huge undertaking.

Upload PDFs using Mendeley website interface
When I'm at a computer without Mendeley Desktop installed, I would like to be able to add a reference/document by uploading the PDF to the website. Currently, the 'Add Document' button on the website only allows for manually adding the reference info. Pressing 'Add Document' should also bring up a Browse button that allows you to locate and upload a document from your computer to the web.

Put "watch folder" contents in collection
It would be very handy if Mendeley would offer more user-control to the automatic import via watch-folders.
For instance, it should be possible to specify that all documents that are imported from a specified watch-folder are automatically put into a collection. This makes it easier to find them later (otherwise they will disappear in the large database).
352 votesThis has been reported to our Developers and various duplicate tickets have been merged to increase it’s priority (thanks to those who pointed them out).
