tagging part of text
For the purpose of text analyses it would be nice to be able to link tags to parts of an article of text.
When selecting a tag to see the texts marked Mendeley should then show the exact marked text including reference to the article.
If that was possible there would not need NVIVO anymore.
348 votesOur Developers are aware of this request and think it would be useful for a future version of Mendeley.

OCR integration in Mendeley Desktop
Add OCR integration so that metadata, text and references can be extracted from scanned (image) PDFs
335 votesThis has been logged with our Development Team. As most documents which are put into Mendeley already have a text layer, however, this is something that we will consider for a later iteration of Mendeley.

djvu/ps/txt/odt files
Hello,
Mendeley has support for djvu/ps/txt/odt by manualy add but we need support like for PDF:
1. Create notes and highlighting.
2. View djvu/ps/chm by internal viewer.Thanks a lot.
330 votesWe are aware of this request, however, as we are just a small team we are working on many exciting new features to improve Mendeley. Our Development Team are aware of this request, but you can view such documents in the native viewer at this time.

More Customisable Table View in Mendeley Desktop
The ability to hide, add, and drag into different orders, columns in the table view would be great.
313 votesWe do have editable table views in the works at the moment and are looking to have it improved in a future version.

temporary citations and RTF scan
It would be nice to be able to insert temporary text citations (i.e. something along the lines of {Smith et al., J Neurosci, 2009}) which will on demand be scanned by Mendeley and turned into proper citation with bibliography attached.
This is especially useful for keeping references intact across applications; i.e. using applications like Devon Think to store notes, Google Docs for collaborative writing, etc.
295 votesOur Development Team are aware of this request. We are developing some exciting new features for future versions of Mendeley.

Zotero 2 way sync
Each program has its own strengths. I prefer zotero when I'm browsing the net and searching for papers, but I prefer a fully dedicated program like mendeley for later editing and browsing my own collection.
These 2 great projects will definitely gain strength if they can work better together, but that requires their worlds to come closer, 2 way sync of their databases and, who knows, in the future a single shared database.
The zotero compatibility/partnership idea is marked as completed but it seems that only a small part of the whole idea (the zotero -> mendeley direction) was dealt…290 votes -
Fix bibtex library bugs: update and remove duplicates
When I remove articles from my library, these items are not being removed from the bibtex library that mendeley is supposed to keep synched. This leads to another problem: duplicates exist in the bibtex file created by mendeley. bibtex does not allow duplicate entries, and so when I try to compile citing one of the duplicated keys, it gives me an error!
285 votesDeleted files still appear in BibTeX, this will be fixed for 1.8.
Duplicate files is a bit more complicated, as it would involve making various fundamental changes to the system. However, we are quite keen to have it looked into and hopefully solved in a future version.
-
Import new entry using bibtex schema
import a new entry for publications AND / OR references using the full bibtex entry (as can be found e.g. on citeseerx).
This could be in the form of an additional tab with the full bibtex reference (cf. jabref)282 votesThis is something that has been discussed with the Development Team. At time of writing, if you have a URL which contains nothing but the BibTeX information (see http://rmp.aps.org/export/RMP/v83/i3/p907_1?type=bibtex , thanks Daniel), you can copy the URL and paste it directly into Mendeley which will import the information (the same way it does if you copy and paste an online PDF URL). Importing with just BibTeX is on the cards for a future version, but there is a suitable work around.

Revelance rating scale in Mendeley Desktop
Add a relevance rating scale to items in Mendeley Desktop. A user can mouse-over the scale to select a document's relevance to himself
280 votesOur Development Team are aware of this request. We are working on various new and exciting features for future versions.

Use HowPublished for urls in BibTex export
Currently urls are not put into the HowPublished attribute on BibTeX exports which means that they're not rendered in the bibliography.
Please enable this as either the default or an option
266 votesThis requires some investigation on the part of our Developers, namely as to what the standard uses for url and howPublished. We will look into it and hopefully get it resolved in a future version.

tag text highlights and notes
It often happens that when you read an article or a book, you find other things not directly related to what you are looking for at the moment that can be useful for other projects or other (often later) parts of your research. Being able to tag specific parts of text, and also the notes you take, would be of great benefit for any scholar doing multiple researches or writing a book, when the amount of things to remember and to consider can become overwhelming.
As of now it seems that only Citavi has this feature (although I haven't tried…252 votesA similar request has been logged here: http://feedback.mendeley.com/forums/4941-mendeley-feedback/suggestions/352643-tagging-part-of-text and if we were to implement either feature the other would most likely be implemented as well.

change "year" field to more flexible "date" field
"Year" is an inadequate field for a lot of citations in, for example, the field of History. It is not uncommon for "September 2006" to be a recommended citation form, or "November/December 2005", or spanning years. More importantly, for things like citations of newspaper articles, a simple year is *not* sufficient -- exact dates must be cited for them to be found by others if the articles are not online (common, again, for historians). The current "year" field is too inflexible and the way in which it quietly deletes any more complicated information you put into it is really unacceptable.…
252 votesThere seem to be several requests here.
1. It is possible to import months/days by going into ‘View’ —> ‘Document Details’ and ticking ‘Months’ and ‘Day’ for the relevant document type. Citation styles can be changed to incorporate these through the CSL editor in 1.7 (due for release later in 2012).
2. Ranges of dates (eg. “1822-24”), these are currently not supported.
3. Dates which are approximate or have some other qualification (eg. “~1700”)
4. The ability to specify separate dates for the original publication and the edition that you are citing.
5. Allow papers to be “in press” and it is also necessary to be able to put “s.d.” (sine datum) or “n.d.” (no date) and equivalents in other languages. Great to hear you are working on this.
These have been raised with Development for future iterations of Mendeley.

PDF Bookmarks/Table of Contents
I find somewhat annoying that there is no way to view the bookmarks/table of contents of the PDF that take me directly to certain pages. I think this is a must for long documents, scrolling directly all the time is a major hassle.
Thanks for the consideration
252 votesThis has been raised with our Development Team.

add institution support for site bookmarklet
When I download papers, I normally do it through my University which has an institute license with the likes of ieeexplore etc. The bookmarklet doesn't seem to support this, perhaps because the url is slightly different. A fix would be awesome!
249 votesOur Web Team have been made aware of this request. We realize it is quite requested, but would require a lot of work on the importer to change how it works to allow it to work with other institutional pages or EZproxies. Regardless, it has been logged and should be reviewed shortly.

Allow images, tables etc. in Notes field in Mendeley Desktop
Currently, the Notes field in Mendeley Desktop only supports text with bold/italic formatting. The Notes field should also support images, tables, bullet points etc.
248 votesMendeley will auto-convert lines starting with asterisks or dashes into bullet point lists for display. Other features for tables and images have been flagged to our Development Team, however, anything too involved with the notes, such as images, will dramatically increase the amount of time it takes for a

Fix capitalization of journal titles
Journal titles are improperly capitalized upon import into Mendeley. For example "Journal of Medicinal Chemistry" shows up as "Journal of medicinal chemistry"
I'll spell it "capitalise" so the British can find this ticket, too.
248 votesThis has been reported to our Development Team. This request seems to talk about the actual file information in Mendeley, but some people are also talking about correct capitalisation* in citations.
This latter problem can be resolved with the new CSL editor in Mendeley 1.7. Information regarding how to start using the CSL Editor can be found here: https://github.com/citation-style-editor/csl-editor/wiki/Using-the-Citation-Style-Editor-with-Mendeley-Desktop
When you are in the editor, on the left you can expand ‘Bibliography’ > ‘Layout’ > ‘Group’ > ‘Container-title (variable)’ and change the ‘Test-case’ to ‘Capitalize-first’. This will capitalise the correct letters when using this citation style.
Another ticket has been merged into this one. This request should be used for any requests to correct the capitalization of any fields in Mendeley (journals, author names etc).

Bibliography network visualization and analysis
I don't know any bibliographic software able to visualize/analyze bibliographic relationships (authors, keywords, journals, citations, pagerank) as interactive networks with state of the art graph layouts, navigation, selection and analysis capabilities.
So... what about gradually implementing such features in Mendeley as a new and experimental set of bibliography mining tools?244 votesThe possibility for this has been discussed with our Development Team for a future version of Mendeley.
-
add MathSciNet support to bookmarklet and mrnumber field to bibtex
Please add support for MathScinet (http://www.ams.org/mathscinet). It's a massive index of mathematical research articles; it covers a large proportion of articles from the mid 1940's, and even goes back to the 1820's.
Articles listed in MathSciNet have a Math Reviews number, which I guess is like a PubMed ID but, well, for math. I would really like to have a "MR number" field, just like there's a DOI and PMID field now.
Without these features, Mendeley will be of almost zero use to most mathematicians.
242 votesOur Developers are aware of this request and should review it’s status for a future version of the Web Importer

Add option to 'move' rather than 'copy' with file organizer
While I love file organizer, I would very much welcome having the option to move the auto-filed file, rather than copy it. With this I can automatically clear out folders by importing files, rather than having to double check that each file has been imported-copied before deleting it.
242 votesThis has been brought up with our Development Team and added to a few other tickets we have for improvements to the ‘File Organizer’

more keyboard shortcuts
I think it would be very useful to have shortcuts for some functions.
E.g.
1. Switching between opened document tabs like in firefox and many text editors (e.g. geany, kate, gedit), by pressing a key, say Alt, and a number. Alt+1 may be reserved for the "my Library" tab.2. Switching between tools, like "add note" and "highlight text". It would be especially useful for the full-screen mode (on small laptops one cannot use the other mode for reading).
237 votesWe have included some keyboard shortcuts for Mendeley 1.7, such as:
Ctrl + 1 – switch to library tab
Ctrl + 2, Ctrl + 3,…, Ctrl + 9 – switch to relevant numbered tab.
Ctrl + Shift + C – Copy Citation
Ctrl + D – Remove Annotation
Ctrl + E – Export File
Ctrl + F – Find (F3 Find next, Shift+F3 Find Last)
Ctrl + G – Go to page number
Ctrl + Shift + H – Highlight Text
Ctrl + K – Copy LaTeX Citation
Ctrl + N – Add note
Ctrl + O – Add Files
Ctrl + Shift + O – Add Folder
Ctrl + Q – Quit program
Ctrl + Shift + R – Highlight Rectangle
Ctrl + T – Highlight Text
Ctrl + W – Close tab
Ctrl + Home – First Page
Ctrl + End – Last Page
F5 – Synchronize Library…
