Maybe there's a solution that can equally be applied to Zoho Writer and Adobe Buzzword, i.e. rather browser-based than via an API?

Good news everyone! There are many improvements with the new release (v.0.9 beta) - we now do automatic fuzzy lookups based on title in CrossRef and PubMed, and incomplete metadata can be looked up on Google Scholar.

Please note that this only works when you have a Mendeley Web account and are logged in, since these lookups are performed via our server.

Rob, one DOI where the lookup fails is 10.1000/182 (which is the example DOI given on http://www.doi.org).
