I'm the co-project lead of the OOo bib project. Rather than see Mendeley write their own custom code using their own custom (and incompatible) fields, I'd see to see collaboration with other projects (like Zotero) on a standard approach and API. This is feasible technically. KOffice has also expressed interest in this sort of work.
